Organic Jira Kolam Rice (5kg Bulk Pack)
Choose options
Jeera kolam rice in a five kilo pack, the short fine grain that most Maharashtrian households cook on an ordinary weekday. Kolam rice takes its name from a grain the size of a jeera seed, and it cooks soft and separate rather than long and dry.
Where this rice comes from
Grown by farmer members inside our group, milled in small lots and packed without a shine polish. No aging chemical, no talc, no artificial fragrance sprayed on at the end. Loose market rice is often blended across seasons and sources. We know the fields behind this pack.
Cooking and eating
Rinse twice, soak fifteen minutes, cook one part rice to two parts water. This is the rice for varan bhaat with ghee and a squeeze of limbu, for masale bhaat at a wedding lunch, for dahi bhaat, and for fodni cha bhaat made out of yesterday's leftovers. It soaks up amti without collapsing into paste.
Pack
A single 5kg bulk pack, sized for a house that cooks rice twice a day or would rather not reorder every fortnight.
Storage
Shift it out of the bag into a dry container once opened. Rice takes on the smell of whatever it is stored beside, so keep it away from masala and detergent.
For something aromatic on a Sunday there is ambemohor rice, and for a grain with the bran left on, indrayani rice. The whole shelf sits at organic rice.
Frequently asked questions
What is jeera kolam rice
A short grained variety from Maharashtra, named because the grain looks like a cumin seed. It is the everyday rice in most Marathi homes and costs less than basmati.
Is kolam rice suitable for daily cooking
Yes, that is exactly what it is grown for. Fifteen minutes on the stove, it holds dal and amti well, and it needs none of the resting time long grain rice wants.
How long does a five kilo pack last
A family of four eating rice once a day finishes it in roughly five weeks. Cooked twice a day, closer to three.
