Peru, guava, amrud, picked at the point where the skin has just shifted from dark green to pale. That is when the fruit smells strongest and the flesh is still firm enough to slice cleanly. Ours come from our own farmer group, grown on vermicompost, and reach Pune a day after picking with no cold storage in between.
Guava is genuinely rich in vitamin C. A firm one eats best cut into wedges with salt and red chilli powder, while the softer ones are better turned into a sarbat or a chutney with green chilli and coriander.
Expect the odd blemish and sizes that do not match. Fruit where every piece looks identical has been sorted for appearance rather than for taste.
Available in 1kg and 2kg. Leave firm guava on the counter and move it to the fridge once it starts to soften.
